Grappling with Mental Illness

"In Grappling with Mental Illness, Andrew Scull provides the best single description of the place of mental illness in the period from World War II to the present in a concise, knowledgeable, and accessible manner. Highly recommended."—Allan V. Horwitz, author of "DSM: A History of Psychiatry's Bible"

"If you are a psychiatrist a new book from Andrew Scull causes mixed emotions. You will love his prose, erudition, insight and dry wit. But you are also in for an elegant kicking. Now we can add schadenfreude to the expected emotions, because in his latest masterpiece sociology, psychology, anthropology and economics get the full Scull treatment previously reserved for my profession. It’s brilliant, bruising and never boring. Buy it now."—Simon Wessely, Regius Professor of Psychiatry, King’s College London
