Astronomy and the Geophysical Tradition in the United States in the 19th Century

This bibliography was compiled by Frederik Nebeker, Mellon Fellow in Bibliography for 1988-89, who unearthed a wealth of material in the manuscript collections and archives of the APS documenting the life and work of 181 American scientists in the fields of astronomy and the “geophysical tradition.” In addition to concise characterizations of the nature of the documents, Dr. Nebeker has added brief biographies of each scientist, a comprehensive list of all scientists working in astronomy and the geophysical tradition, and an index to specific areas of study. This bibliography will be of interest to anyone working on the development of American science and its European roots during the 19th century.
