Papacy and the Levant (1204-1571), Vol. IV

"The publication of [volumes 3 and 4] brings to a splendid conclusion one of the great historical enterprises of the decade…Setton’s work is a monument not only to the industry of a lifetime but to the concerns of a humanist historian. For all his detail, at once powerful and overwhelming, Setton never forgets the individual, the person who is at the center of the web of events and movements we call history."—Glenn W. Olsen, Church History

"[Setton’s] study has no equal…it excels in precision of all data…[a] magnum opus… a superlative achievement."—Erika Spivakovsky, American Historical Review

"[M]uch more than a History of the Popes…it is a mine of information and source material into which anyone working in late medieval and sixteenth-century history will wish to burrow."—Michael Mallett, Times Literary Supplement

"[N]ot just an invaluable documentary storehouse for the specialist diplomatic historian…Setton provides a readable chronological account of major European, especially Mediterranean affairs, which can be utilized and enjoyed by a whole variety of students…[E]ssential in a good history library."—Christopher Black, History

"Monumental."—William H. McNeill, Renaissance Quarterly
