It is with great sadness that we share the news that Richard R. Beeman, Penn Press author and John Welsh Centennial Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, has recently passed away after a long illness. Beeman was author of two Penn Press books: The Evolution of the Southern Backcountry (1984) and The Varieties of Political Experience in Eighteenth-Century America (2004). He also served as director of the McNeil Center in the 1980s and as a dean at Penn.
