It is with great sadness that we share the news that Jonathan Riley-Smith, Penn Press author and prominent historian of the crusades, has passed away. Riley-Smith taught at the St. Andrews University, Cambridge University, and Royal Holloway, University of London, before returning to Cambridge in 1994 to assume the position of Dixie Professor of Ecclesiastical History, in which he remained until his 2005 retirement. Among his numerous and much-heralded books on the crusades was The First Crusade and the Idea of Crusading, first published by Penn Press in 1986. The staff of Penn Press extends our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
