Darwin’s Birthday

Today is the 200th anniversary of Charles Robert Darwin's birth. Here in Philadelphia, there are many ways to celebrate, including this year's Darwin Day Free Evolutionary Teach In at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, which is part of the Year of Evolution program.

For Darwin fans who prefer celebrating at home, we recommend The Origin of Species: A Variorum Text, written by Darwin and edited by Morse Peckham. More than just another edition of the pivotal scientific work, the variorum text is a window into the evolution of evolution itself.

According to a review in The Times Literary Supplement "Darwin produced six editions [of The Origin of Species] during his lifetime and, as Peckham demonstrated nearly fifty years ago, he tinkered constantly with the text, adding and amending, revising and rethinking and, above all, responding to criticism."
