"Never in history has an academic exercise made such a rapid and important impact on the real world, as did Thomas Clarkson's Latin essay against slavery in 1785. Rich with archival detail and historical context, this quietly powerful book by Dee Andrews and Christopher Parmenter charts how a college student's essay generated a national abolition movement in just a couple of years, and thereafter changed the course of history. A fascinating study and invaluable resource!"—James Basker, editor and compiler of "American Antislavery Writings: Colonial Beginnings to Emancipation"

"Thomas Clarkson’s fiery abolitionist tract of 1786 became the bible of the early antislavery movement. Few realize that it was first written in Latin as a prize essay at Cambridge. This deeply researched book, written jointly by a classical scholar and an Early American historian, unveils the rich context in which Clarkson’s Latin essay emerged. This is an important contribution to the history of slavery, abolitionism, and classical reception."—Caroline Winterer, William Robertson Coe Professor of History and American Studies, Stanford University
