Review essays

Humanity is dedicated to the publication of incisive review essays on recent scholarly books on human rights, humanitarianism, and development in the modern and contemporary world. These essays usually bring together more than one monograph, exploring them in comparison, while also placing them in their larger scholarly framework, and sustain their discussion for at least 5000 words. For an example, please see Pamela Beth Harris’ recent essay on Stephen Hopgood’s The Endtimes of Human Rights and Alison Brysk’s Speaking Rights to Power.

If you are interested in contributing a review-essay to Humanity, please submit a one-page proposal about the set of books you would like to review via e-mail. Your proposal should explain the approach or framework you plan to bring to your review.

Humanity is a triannual publication dedicated to publishing original research and reflection on human rights, humanitarianism, and development in the modern and contemporary world. An interdisciplinary enterprise, contributions come from anthropology, economics, law, literature, history, philosophy, politics, public health, sociology and the intersections between and among them.

Early Career Scholar Prize

Each year, Humanity awards the Early Career Scholar Prize for the best essay published in the journal in a calendar year. The prize is open to graduate students or those without tenure track jobs at the time of submission.

Humanity is participating in Project MUSE’s Subscribe to Open Program for 2025. This program opens current content without article processing charges if sales of Project MUSE’s collection reach a minimum sustainability threshold. We will know by the end of January 2025 if 2025 content from Humanity will be available Open Access.
