Join Penn Press, Independence Historical Trust, and the Philadelphia Visitor Center Corporation on November 13 in the heart of Philadelphia at the Independence Visitor Center to celebrate the launch of the landmark new book project Greater Philadelphia: A New History for the Twenty-First Century.
Editors Charlene Mires and Howard Gillette, who have been with the project from its inception, will share what goes into creating a work of this scale, the surprising stories behind Philadelphia’s unique history, and the lengths they went to tell it all.
As the nation prepares for the 250th anniversary of American independence in 2026, these volumes provide a timely and enduring resource to guide celebrations and conversations, illuminating Philadelphia’s essential role in the nation’s story—unearthing hidden histories, points of pride, and the complex connections that bind the city to its region, the nation, and the world. Richly illustrated with full-color photographs and maps, Greater Philadelphia will serve readers, educators, and communities throughout the Semiquincentennial and beyond—presenting Philadelphia as never before: dynamic, diverse, and globally relevant.
